I've been working with Governor Jennifer Granholm and my colleagues in the legislation to see to it that the Great Lakes are protected from companies that want to sell Great Lakes water for profit or send it to other states.
This legislative package will not only create much-needed standards for private water sales, but will also create tough penalties for those who violate our standards. The Great Lakes have defined both the cultural and geographic landscapes of Michigan. They are an essential part of Michigan business and tourism, and their 3,200 miles of shoreline are a magnificent source of beauty for this state.
The Great Lakes nourish us by providing one of the world's largest supplies of fresh water. Together, we can fight to protect the great nature resources, our water, our common legacy.
